Opeth and In Flames have joined forces, double-headlining the Communion of Sirens tour, with Red Fang supporting at Gas Monkey Live! Saturday night.
Primarily considered a “death-metal” band, Sweden’s Opeth have always incorporated different elements of music such as acoustic folk, progressive rock, and even jazz into their often lengthy compositions. But with the release of 2011’s ‘Heritage’, and the latest release ‘Pale Communion‘, (both mixed by long time friend, and Porcupine Tree front-man, Steven Wilson) Opeth have drawn heavy (and in my opinion, undeserved) criticism for abandoning the trademark “growling” vocals and hardcore “metal” styling in favor of a more classic “prog-rock/metal” vision using “clean” vocals. However, the band has included several “death-metal” classics to their set-list, sure to appease old-school fans attending this tour.
Also from Sweden, co-headliner In Flames have released eleven studio albums and have sold over 2 million records worldwide, including their latest album ‘Siren Charms‘.
Opening the evening was Red Fang from Portland, OR. With three releases under their belt, their latest is 2013’s ‘Whales and Leeches‘.
