The Devin Townsend Project performed at Gas Monkey Live! Thursday night, with Animals As Leaders and Monuments opening the evening.
Starting his career singing on Steve Vai‘s ‘Sex and Religion’ album, released in 1993, Devin Townsend founded the band Strapping Young Lad, releasing five albums between 1995 and 2007 while also forming The Devin Townsend Band in 2002, releasing two albums between 2003 and 2007. After a two year hiatus, Townsend returned with the Devin Townsend Project, releasing six albums, including his latest release, ‘Z²‘, released October 27th on his own independent label HeavyDevy Records. ‘Z²’ consists of two albums; ‘Sky Blue’ which features material from the Devin Townsend Project, and a “Ziltoid” concept album, ‘Dark Matters’, a sequel to Townsend’s 2007 solo album ‘Ziltoid the Omniscient’, a “rock-opera” featuring a fictional alien.
Animals As Leaders (formed in 2007 by guitarist Tosin Abasi) are promoting their third and latest album ‘The Joy of Motion‘, released in March of 2014.
Opening the evening was Monuments, featuring their newest member, Chris Barretto (ex-Periphery vocalist) who replaced original vocalist Matt Rose. The band is promoting their second album ‘The Amanunensis‘, released in July of 2014.
